thinks they're special? Talks about how great their country is when you and they know damn well that not even their parents have been there, but they obsess over it, and believe that being Italian just doesn't make them one of us uncivilized, ignorant Americans...

Just something I noticed.

I'm Irish. So it really doesn't matter about what exact part i'm from- it's really just what i'm drinkin'.

I'm Italian from Italy and every now and then I wonder at American native English speakers labeling themselves Italian (Irish, Polish and so on) only because their forefathers were Italian ...
A person can be proud about own origins, but he/she can not pretend to be what he/she's not.
If you don't speak Italian, you have no special customs but for holiday, nobody prevent you from calling yourself Italian, but just you aren't.

I think this to be a very American way of thinking, just as the habit to claim "I''m 1/4 Irish, 1/8 Polish, 1/12 English": in my personal opinion I find this latter beahviour meaningless. It is not your ancestorship to determine your ethnicity: education does.

Don't count me in on that "most every". I try to avoid being an Italian stereotype. Now that that's out of the way, why don't you come on by for some of mama's home cookin', eh? C'mon... family takes care of family. Tell her, Vinny.

Yeah, and they always have to announce it. They're just proud of it though. I know what you mean but I think they just like being what they are, just like some people are proud to be naturally blond or naturally attractive or whatever.

It does annoy me when they're 1/8th Italian and they act like they're straight out of Sicily, though. Same with people who have a smidgen of American Indian blood and they go around acting like they're a godd@mned war chief.
