I know there are cellphones that use the Linux OS but what else? The program is so customizable that I have to believe its used for other machines/tools than the computer.

Is Microsoft limited to the PC however?

Linux can be used for ipods and other devices such as Tivo DVR and other handheld devices. Microsoft is also used on cellphones, these devices are called smartphones. It is also used on portable devices called Pocket PCs.
