The term you're after is "salutary neglect". ("salutary" means "beneficial, wholesome")
The original expression was "a wise and salutary neglect". It was used by Edmund Burke in his speech before Parliament on March 22, 1775 ("On Moving His Resolutions for Conciliation with the Colonies") to describe the former policy/practice of Britain toward its American colonies.
This idea was this -- that by Britain's NOT enforcing taxes
(even if they were 'on the book's) . . . but allowing the colonies a great deal of economic freedom would stimulate commerce. The colonies would grow and prosper MORE... and, as a consequence, contribute more to the wealth and well-being of Britain. In fact Sir Robert Walpole (the nation's first Prime Minister) had encouraged this approach.
This system had indeed caused the colonies to grow quickly, not only in prosperity but in NUMBERS -- a lot of people WANTED to emigrate there because of the freedom and economic OPPORTUNITY under this system.
Note that this was very different from the way colonies were generally treated at the time. Under the dominant "mercantilist" system, colonies existed SOLELY to benefit the mother country, as a source of raw materials Typically, colonies had only a small number of colonists to carry out the business that would help the mother country (e.g., the French settlers in America)
PART of this "neglect" meant that the British American colonists were left to solve a lot of their own problems --to provide for their own defense and write their own laws to handle local matters. In this way a whole economic and political system grew up WITHIN the colonies in many ways independent from Britain. (Note that this also included entire businesses and international trading based NOT on the British "laws" but on the British POLICY.)
BUT, after the French & Indian War ended (1763), the new king, George III, and his supporters decided to begin enforcing such laws, both to help pay for the war expenses and to bind the colonies more closely to the mother country. In other words, NOW they would actually try to follow the mercantilist system -- though it was at odds with everything in the existing colonial system.
It was this threat to the economic system they had developed AND the freedoms they had enjoyed that caused colonists to resist various British measures (including taxes), and ultimately to rebel.

I don't know your religious background, but you need to get plugged into some social groups who will accept you without any judgement. I know christians sometimes get a bad rap about being judgmental, but that is the exception and not the rule. You need to go to church and get involved in a singles group or a college and career class at a good bible based church. You will be suprised at the acceptence and understanding that you will receive if you get plugged into the right group. You might even find a single female who is looking for the same things you are, and who knows, you might even find The One! Hope it all works out for you.
