salesman that I would be able to network the 2 computers together with everything I already have, just by using the modem and ethernet cables. Can any one explaine how to do this? If you need more information, I'll try to add it if requested. Thanks!

I think you may have gotten a sales pitch.
If your modem also has a router then you should be good to go. The rule of thumb is you get one ip address to a connection (home type setup). In order to connect two computers simultaneously to one ip address you have to have a router (this allows two computers to in effect share single ip address).
Generally a modem will have one ethernet port, and possibly a USB port. A router will have four or more ethernet ports.

Good Luck

You could install a 2nd Network Interface Card (NIC) in one of the two computers. Then enable Internet Connection Sharing on the computer with 2 NICs. Then connect that machine to the DSL network bridge (modem). Then run a crossover Ethernet cable from that machine to the 2nd machine.

The machine with 2 NICs would be the ICS Host system. When it is operating as an ICS Host you will note a decrease in performance of approximately 20% or more. This system has to be on, for the other system to be able to access the Internet.

The more logical and long term solution is to get a router or a wireless router. You may have gotten a combo Network Bridge/Wireless router from AT&T when you ordered your DSL. Usually these are manufacted by 2Wire. The ones that are purely a network bridge without a wireless router are made by Siemens. Look at the bottom of the router to check which brand of equipment you have.

If you have the 2Wire brand of router/bridge combo, you could just connect both computers by Ethernet patch cable to the router portion of the DSL network bridge. One in port one of the router, one in port two of the router.

If you dont have more than one port on the modem you will need to get a router. Each device will need it's own IP address and to do this they need to have their own dedicated connection-via a hub

good luck

Is your internet connection broadband? If it is, get a router. It will attach to your modem and will have 4 to 8 ports where you can attach your pc's.

If your computers are in seperate rooms you need to get a router and an adaptor. Hook the router up to one PC and the adaptor to the 2nd pc.

You can not do this. You need a router to run 2 connections at once.
