I bought a used water softener from Habitat for Humanity. I am going to have it put into my home. We have copper piping, and I wanted to know how would I know if the water softener I bought from Habitat is working properly once setup? Will I have some type of indication at all for this? I am very new at owning and home so I know nothing about them. Help!

I would be very leery of a used water softener. Why did they remove it?.......Anyway, once you have the unit installed, and you add salt, manually regenerate the system. It should either have a dial or a keypad. If it has a dial, turn it to regenerate. If it has a keypad, punch thru the menu till "regenerate". Softeners have resin beads in them, when clean, they attract minerals from the water, from static electricity. After the minerals accumulate on the beads, the softener washer all the mineral deposits off the beads with salt. Then it washes the salt out of the beads. This usually happens at midnight(i.e. 2AM)when you are asleep. You can program the softener to recharge when you want, as often as you want. You must keep salt in the brine tank.If your water is soft, it will seem slick, you will use less soap to lather, and you should notice "no residue" on glasses, dishes, and tiles. I hoped I have helped. Kind regards! Good luck! P.S. You can buy bags of salt at the grocery store or home centers.

Its not a solid plan to drink water from a softener,(through potential of bacterialogical an infection interior the resin column) so which you're able to be able to desire to hold a "transforming into important" eating water furnish. further, not good value to bathe autos, water gardens or flush loos with mushy water. So, set up that your softener components warm/chilly for tub/bathe washing machines etc. The water softener works on a resin column that's "Brine'd " to effectivly soften the water. After a definite quantity of water, counting on ability, you will could desire to 'regenerate', it fairly is whilst the resin colum is washed by with brine. There are 2 varieties, the single which you placed as much as say regenerate on a daily basis or 2( and this could ensue despite the fact that while you at the instant are not there) or, the extra 'salt good value' form which inserts out via water utilization whilst it desires to regenerate (microprocceser controlled) The microproccesser variations are extra high priced to purchase, yet extra fee-effective and extra effective to run

You should be able to tell by the smell of the water. I can tell when mine isn't working because the water starts to stink.
