Not unless Liriano is actually healthy. You won't be seeing Liriano put up the AMAZIN' numbers because of Tommy John Surgery.

Yes, they should.
Liriano and Garza are sure to be in the rotation, and Slowey, Blackburn and Perkins could also contribute. Boof is always there to continue his losing ways. If the Twins don't contend next year, it would at least be an opportunity for this young staff to get some real experience.
The Twins should not sign Santana to an extension. If they do, they'll be devoting more than 20 percent of their payroll to one player. If any player is deserving of that type of money, it is Santana. He is a phenomenal pitcher who very well might be entering his prime. But even in his prime, he cannot win without run support. This year is a case in point. He was second in the league in K's, had one of the best K/BB ratio, a fantastic BAA and a very respectable ERA. If he had received Red Sox-type run support, he would have a far better record than 15-13; in fact, his ERA was only .05 higher than 20 game winner Beckett's.
If the Twins can't afford the offensive players required to support Santana now, how will they possibly be able to do so when he is receiving a large portion of the payroll? It is simply impossible.
The reality is, the Twins need to look for offensive help and a up and coming starting pitcher in a Santana trade. Sad as it will be to see him go and possibly suffer through a year or two of rebuilding seasons, it is the best possible move available to new GM Bill Smith in order to extract maximum value from the beloved Cy Santana.
Go Twins

Buster Olney on Espn.com wondered about a Jose Reyes-Johan Santana trade; as a Phils fan, i wouldnt like to see it happen, but it could be one of those trades that helps both teams(especially if it allowed the Twins to retain Torii Hunter). There is no way the Twins can lose him for draft picks, and there are enough teams out there with prospects and money to make it worthwhile for Minnesota.

The Twins are going to get as much out of Santana in '08, so trading before he becomes a free agent won't happen. The Twins will be a contender next season, with Liriano coming back, so they can't afford to get rid of him before the season's over. It could be a lot worse offense-wise in the Twin Cities, have you seen Oakland lately...

The Mets seem to already be the strongest bet for Santana, and they would most likely have to trade Mileage and another prospect for him.
If the Twins were smart they would, and just rebuild a little bit. They know that Torii Hunter wants out of Minnesota, and with the money they get to trade away Santana they could get another Center Fielder like Andruw Jones who today cut ties with the Braves.
It's going to be a fun off season.

The Twins will do everything they can to sign Santana. The reason they are willing to let Hunter go is to hang on to the money they need to sign him. If the Twins don't sign Santana they will send a message to their fans that they are not interested in winning.

Only a complete idi** of a team would trade for Santana now, you have him as long as you rent a movie at Block Buster!
What, ok...'Hey, ill trade you Santana for Bobby Abreu & a pitching prospect. But remember he is also a free agent by the end of the month!'

From the Twins standpoint, they should do everything they can to hold on to him. Since I am a Yankee fan, I would like to see the Twins trade Santana to the Yankees.

They should not. But realistically if they don't trade him he would walk in his abitration year and make tons loads of money and the twins will be left in the dark, they have to get some type of value out of him. It will probably be the Mets, I have a feeling Reyes might of played his last game for the Mets on Sunday. I just hope they don't trade him.

Why would any sane general manager trade away one of the ten best lefthanded pitchers in the last thirty-plus years? Especially from a team with all that fine young talent?
Small-market teams have to spend wisely in order to be able to snag that one big contract, that franchise-building player. They already have that player in Santana, as well as Mauer and Morneau.
I'd be shocked if they didn't try their hardest to keep them all for the next five or so years, if not longer. Expect Torii to go bye-bye, and at least two of these three to get extensions in the next year or two.

With Liriano coming back next season, the Twins should do everything they can to hold onto Santana. That 1-2 punch will lead them right back to the playoffs.
