Hm, well i'd stay away from Gideon if the middle name is Merlin. Its a little too Magicey.
Names with an "M" sound in the middle will flow well with the starting sound in Merlin.

But I think it's a great idea to look for some names along those same lines that might appeal to him ... so you're not so much telling him "no way are we using that name!" so much as "well what do you think about these similar options?" LOL
