g - 2/5 = g + 4/7

This doesn't look right. Let's check!
First, get rid of the fractions-
g - 2/5 = g + 4/7
5g -2 = 5g +(5*4)/7
5g -2 = 5g + 20/7
Keep going-
35g - 14 = 35g + 20

Now add 14 to both sides-
35g = 35g + 34

This isn't looking good! The g terms cancel out, leaving:
0 = 34

Well, zero does NOT equal 34, so there's someting wrong with the original equation.

It doesn't apply to any things because -2/5 is not equal 4/7
