The steps and paperwork necessary for obtaining a business license will vary from state to state. Your State and/or local Chamber of Commerce, local Small Business Administration office (SBA), or city government office will typically be the place to turn to for information on obtaining such licenses.

In addition, many businesses require specific licenses for the sale or manufacturing of certain products. For example, businesses making, selling, or storing food products will be required to have specific licenses or permits typically issued by the health department. To make sure you have all the licenses necessary to open a pet shop check with your local SBA office for specific instructions and help. In order to locate your local SBA office, visit their Web site at http://www.sba.gov.

I disagree with Steph. There is no way that all pet stores are stocked with dogs from Puppy Mills. I'm not exactly sure how you would get the license, but I would imagine that you would go through the Business Bureau in your city. If you want to open a Pet Shop, I think you should. I'm not saying this because I don't think Puppy Mills are bad, because I think they are horrible, but I don't think that should be the reason why you shouldn't open up a pet store, if that is your dream.

Pet shops vary in what 'livestock' they carry, so you can purchase from local breeders (birds, small animals, fish, etc.) and not be part of the puppy mill problem. Many stores also have 'adoptions' with breed rescues, which can supply the larger animals IF you want to carry larger animals.

Most pet stores are all about the toys/equipment/food anyway. Some specialize in reptiles, some in fish, some in birds, etc. I saw one advertised that was half snake pet shop and half comic book store (a weird combo but it turned out that the owner bred and raised snakes for a hobby).

Check with your City Clerk as to the licensing you'll need, if you need anything from the state capital (with the Dept. of Revenue) they'll let you know about the paperwork.

Talk to the people in the licensing bureau of the city/town you live in or look for a business for sale and talk to the store owner

Never open a pet store.. Have you done o\your research on where those animals come from? Puppymills.. I suggest looking it up google AND youtube.

Blakeh21- ya wanna bet? If they aren't then they are from back yard breeders.. What RESPONSIBLE breeder who LOVES their dog would sell the puppies to a store that would jack up the price use false advertisement like the words 'teacup' and 'micro' then sell the puppies at an age too young to go home or be around that many people to people who just think 'Hey lok at that cute puppy.. Mommy I want it'.. Pet stores rely on impulsive buyers.. No educated person would buy from a pet store
