It does fine when I first start it, after a while, especially as the day goes on and it gets hotter, it has trouble accelerating... It sounds like it's grinding.. once it passes 65 it's fine... The air conditioner also died... My mechanic can't find what's wrong; he says the transmission and the gas systems are fine; he hooked it up to that machine but the machine says the car is fine. At times when I'm stepping on the gas trying to get it to go, the check engine like turns on and stays steady, but next time I drive the car, it's off. It is due for an oil change and the change oil lights up, but my mechanic saw that and he didn't mention that was it.. Please help.. anyone?!?!

I'm thinking of trading it in even though I know i'll have negative equity w/ the trade in. =(

I think you have a secondary ignition system failure. You stated that above 65mph it was fine. At highway speeds there isn't much of a load on the engine as there would be when you are first accelerating from a standstill or when you are going through the gears. Hence the ignition system doesn't have to work that hard. The grinding noise and subsequent lack of power are probably the engine misfiring. The A/C problem may be the result of the check engine light. Under some circumstances the ECM may command the A/C compressor off if it is programmed to do so when specific codes are set in the ECM.

We have an 01' Impala and have had a lot of little problems with it as well. Our air doesn't run exceptionally cold and we've had issues with both the "engine oil" and "low coolant" lites on the dash. Unless your fluids are actually low (which you should make sure of), the problem might be with the electric sensors that cause these lites to turn on & off. Bad sensors can be by-passed, but then you have to worry about keeping an eye on the fluids regularly. Fixing the sensors could cost hundreds! As far as the "grinding" noise...I has a similar problem that turned out to be a wheel balancing fix. Come to find out, the car was shaking a bit and sounding like something was grinding and all it needed was to have the wheels balanced!!

Despite the small stuff, we love the Impala, but we are trading ours in before too much more happens!

I agree with most of the people here, you need to find a new mechanic.
If your Impala has a V6 they were real bad about ignition coils corroding at their towers. For that you would need to replace the defective coil(s) (Usually #2 or #4) Does the "Check engine" lamp flash? Big clue there.

I don't think converter. you would lack power all of the time.
I also don't think fuel filter because that would show up at higher speeds.

I also agree about the possibility of the transmissions TCC solenoid being stuck on. GM does have an S/B on that condition.

If the "check engine" light is coming on it should store a code(s). If it is not storing any codes then you may have a computer problem.

Another thought would be the EGR valve stuck open, but on those vehicles that would be a rarity. They usually clogged up first.

Forget the fuel filter change, not your problem. Can't tell a thing from the clues given. Grinding ?? I would suspect a cat. converter but that won't be it as everything is ok after 65.I would quit paying a mekanik that can;t fix a problem and find one that can fix it.

after driving you car for a while pull into a dark area and get out, look under the car and see if you see a red glow. This will indicate that the converter is stopped up.That will more than likely be your problem as for you mech. He's a douchbag find another one who knows what he's talkin about.

just a dumb thought here ... but if your A/C has died, could there be a problem with the A/C pulley restricting the rotation of the serpentine belt, thus causing the rest of your problems?

First, find a mechanic that will tell you what code is tripped with the check engine light.
Next, change your fuel filter. By then, you should find out what the problem is.

I think your car is overheating and even if you don't get it fixed it still runs at 65MPH so you should be fine.
