Probably when the expression started being used women weren't out and about being assholes and ******** up the world (they probably had to stay at home and cook for that sumbitch!)
Therefore it was only males that were deserving of the adjective. I prefer the word c_unt for a woman who I would normally want to call a son-of-a-*****.
