Carla & Bella Milla are correct! The Americans really need to visit Brasil before they can say how dangerous it is. I'm from Scotland, but I have links with Brasil that have taken me back there at regular intervals (Sorocaba; Sao Paulo). I've never had a problem there, though obviously with my pale skin I really stick out as a gringo (LOL)!

Americans think Brazil is dangerous primarily because there are some cities where violence and theft are very common, especially Rio, where most American tourists go. I have lived in Brazil, and practically everyone in Rio has a story about being robbed, often at gun point. Further, Rio has a murder rate of 10 people per day, much higher than any city in America. Also, robbers target tourists in places like Ipanema and Copa Cabana, and the stories of these robberies get passed around quickly. I will admit that Rio and Brazil in general is not nearly as dangerous as people think, but to say that Brazil has no more crim ethan a place like New York City is completely false. A simple review of publicly available statistics will show you otherwise. See the links below.

Regardless of whether or not it's dangerous and wild, isn't the probability that us Americans "believe" it to be so, a good thing?
Because then it would mean that we wouldn't visit, and of course the last thing that you'd want in your country is a bunch of poorly educated and misguided tourists, as Bella Milla so elegantly stated?
So is it not a good thing that Americans "may" think this about your country? Because if we thought otherwise, we'd visit, and you know how awful we Americans can be!
I know Brazil isn't like that, but for your sake, I won't tell, okay? Best to keep the stereotype alive in the U.S., then risk an invasion of uneducated and misguided people, eh?

Because we saw City of God (Cidade de Deus, brincando....) Well you know, we hear about the violence in Rio & Sao Paulo and think the worst. I didn't have any problems in Rio or Sao Paulo, but I did see violence in SP. But I love Brazil, I'm going back in November.
EDIT: LOL @ Arizona. Strange how uneducated me has to explain to my brazilian wife where places like Burma, the Seychelles and Cameroon are, but who knows, maybe Bella could have done that too. ;)
