A couple of kids need string basses. Both are less than 5 feet tall. How do I know the correct size to get? I have also heard that I should stay away from 1/4 sized instruments if possible because they aren't made consistently/well?

3/4 size is standard in just about all but symphony orchestras. I am 6'7" (taller than a 3/4 bass), but I will be getting a 3/4 size soon, regardless.

If your kids are almost 5' tall they will still be able to play a 3/4. Just make sure the peg is collapsible.

If they truly cannot play the top of the neck, then they can always learn to play an octave higher on the neck (that's real good stuff to know, too).
