In zombie movies, if they need or crave flesh, and there are so many of them, usually clustered together in tight groups, how come they've never tried to eat each other?

They don't know that other zombies are dead...also, why would they only eat the living?

There's no real understanding as to why (typically) zombies only attack living creatures or how they differentiate between the living & other zombies.

Some films (like the Resident Evil series) say that their zombies have an inherit inborn sense that detects "life-energy" and they seek that.

In other films - the zombies can smell the living... and in others (like Shaun of the Dead) the zombies are drawn visually to their prey.

In the Video Dead, that was how they killed the zombies. They locked the zombies in a basement and the zombies eventually ate each other to death.

My guess is warm blood, the Zombies have coagulated blood. In Shawn of the Dead they have that scene where they act like Zombies and get away with it for awhile.

They only eat the living. Zombies are dead.
