my computer is slow and sometimes locks up if i'm just using the media player and playing cards. i know for a fact it has adware, spyware, malware and trojans/viruses on it. i have avg, zone alarm, windows defender, spybot search and destroy, ccleaner, and norton but they don't seem to work. we have had to wipe the computer twice before and well i'm just not willing to do that again damn it. we can't afford to spend money on programs, we just need something that will fix it without wiping.

i don't use all the programs at the same time. and yes i do use norton, norton sucks anyway. i have 1gb of memory. i use disk cleanup and defrag as well. this happened about a month, month and a half ago. i play everquest regularly but i can't play it now because of the viruses. i used to be able to 2box everquest with minimal lag, now i can't even log on because i can't move. it's not a memory problem.

First of all you need to pick a set of tools you want to use and stay with it.

Each one of the tools you listed are very similar and could be interfering with each other and could even be stopping each other from running and working correctly.

Also, each one of those program have components that load at boot thus using more memory thus slowing your computer down.

Here is what I would suggest you do:
Un-Install windows defender, spybot, ccleaner and norton.
Run Avg to make sure your clean.

Go to http://www.iolo.com/ and download there 30 day trail version of system mechanic 7 install it and allow it to run through several times and optimize windows and optimize bootup and that should speed up your computer. Email if you have any questions.

BTW: I've used it and and I went from a 4 minute bootup to 57 seconds. But, I work in IT so I knew what I can and cannot do. Good luck.

You mentioned all the things that you need to protect your computer. However, security software can be very damaging to your system unless you counteract the excess of information it adds to your computer registry. Defragging and DiskCleanup can help to cut down on the files. However, security software adds a ton of information to your computer registry. This happens becuase your computer must keep track of all the updates necessary to keep your computer safe. However, these files can ballon up to 100 megabytes a piece, Norton is notorious for this problem. You computer must search through all those registry files when you open or use anything. So, the more files, the more time it takes, the slower your computer will become. You should scan your computer with a good registry cleaner to check how many excess and duplicate files can be remove. If you have anything above 20 errors or so, clean them for an instant boost in speed. Hope this helps!

Follow these steps if you never do any computer maintenance.
- run Disk Cleanup - from the System Tools section of Accessories
- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.
- run DEFRAG - from the System Tools section of Accessories.

Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.

Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com

Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

With a little patience, you can fix it.

First, download and run this program:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis.php

Run it, and save a log.

Then log onto this forum and post your log:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html

Follow their instructions to a 'T', and everything should be fine.

I recommend dropping all but 1 antivirus and malware programs, they tend to have some issues when you install more than one, this is one time where 'more is not better'.

you're running too many programs in the background and they're eating up your memory. Are you USING the Norton, etc.? They're no good if you don't RUN them, ya know! :)
