cut out lyrics?

Like Madonna's cover of Don McLean's American Pie. Not only does she make it sound terrible, but she also cuts out 3/4 of the lyrics and the song loses it's meaning. It doesn't feel like it's about the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper anymore....

Do you have examples?

Hillary Duff changed a lyric in My Generation to "I hope I don't die before I get old"...that small change completely changed the meaning of the whole song. It's ridiculous. If you're going to cover a classic, at least try to do it justice (not that Hillary could anyway).

It all depends on the intention. If a band is trying to sincerely cover a song, then they should do their best to preserve its original meaning. However, not every band is interested in that sort of cover. When a band like Laibach covers Queen's "One Vision" and changes the style so that the song means something completely different, it's intentional. They're not clumsily omitting something, but re-interpreting the song altogether. Some people might not like that, but it's hardly anything new, and the writer still gets the royalties.

I can think of another example. Gallery was a group that had a few hits in the early 1970s. One of them was a cover of "I Believe In Music", written by Mac Davis. In it, he makes a reference to God near the end of the song. The group changed it so that line was completely meaningless. If people don't want to sing songs as they were originally written, then they shouldn't try to cover them

I didn't realize she did American Pie. That makes me mad, that is one of the best written songs of all ime. For everything it talks about, the 3 deaths, Dylan, Beatles, Woodstock, Vietnam, Stones, etc. The true depth is amazing and its a shame she f'ed it up.

I have just four words for you (They'll make you cry tears or horror and convince you the apocolypse is upon us!):

ANN WILSON "IMMIGRANT SONG"

She didn't change it (or, not that I know of - I turn if off as soon as it comes on...) but she certainly ruined it!

Now, excuse me, but I must leave to pray before the alter of Rock for the salvation of rock fans, and write letters of condolence to Robert Plant and the boys.....

Worst song to be remade - "Right here waiting" originally by Richard Marx, remade by Clay Aiken..No words were cut, but Clay's voice and the way he sings it ruined this classic..
