While fear is inborn in all of us as a means of survival when a threat is real, anxiety is a learned behavior, a lesser form of fear about a threat that is not immediate. For example, one can be anxious about meeting a new person, going to a job interview, or making a speech in public. There are no direct threats to survival with anxiety, but it is not a pleasant sensation, and it can be overcome.

One type of anxiety comes from a flight, fear response when someone feels threatened or from fright. This feeling is brought about by a surge of adrenalin. People have been known to do extra ordinary things in this state, like lifting a car off someone.

Another type of anxiety is a mental condition do to some kind of chemical imbalance. Many people self treat by using marijuana, or street downers. Psychiatrically there are several medications that can help. Some of the medications are addictive so Psychiatrists shy away from using those drugs which means that many people that are resistant to common drugs never get treated and live in a miserable state of anxiety most of their lives.
