Why is the process of DNA replication necessary?

Without DNA, cells would not function and yet alone code for proteins. DNA replication allows the cell to make an identical copy and then when it under goes cell division, each cell gets one copy. Therefore allowing both cells to function, and the cycle repeats until the telomeres on chromosomes run out.
