Energy:
Producers use light from the environment as the energy source to make food. Cellular processes generate heat which is released to the environment.

Materials:
Cells get carbon dioxide and water from the environment for photosynthesis, and release oxygen as a product. Cells also use minerals that producers get from the soil. When organisms die and decompose, their materials are returned to the environment to enter the cycles again.
