It's possible that Pink Floyd's Lost for Words and Coming Back to Life off the Divison Bell is about Roger Waters

The entire "Wish You Were Here" album was written for, inspired by, and dedicated to Syd.

The only recent song I could think of would be "Savior" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'm not sure it would count though, since it was written about their guitar player, John Frusciante, but he rejoined the band when recording the album it appears on (Californication). So he's playing on the song written for him.
Oh, and "My Lovely Man" by RHCP was written for Hillel Slovak, their former guitarist.

When eight of Reba McEntire's band members were killed in a plane crash, she wrote an entire album, "For My Broken Heart", including the songs "If I had Only Known", and the title track.

I can only think of one at the moment--fall out boy's "grenade jumper" is about a good friend of the band that was in pete wentz's old band.
yeah, it's rare thing for bands to actually put out songs that are about bandmates or friends in general.

"Hey Marc Riley" by The Fall. "How Do You Sleep?" by John Lennon (about Paul, although also about himself. Apparently.) Both fairly vitriolic rather than sappy and lame.
