Vowels are the letters of the alphabet which can be pronounced on their own with using other letters. So: a, e, i o, u.
In German they're called 'Selbstlaut' which means they have their own sound. Consonants need vowels to be pronounceable. 'B' needs 'ee'. In German these are called 'Mitlaut' which means that they need other letters to pronounce them.

Proper vowels are a,e,i,o and u. Y can be used to replace a vowel but it isn't classified as a vowel. Sorry Gemma you do not need a vowel to make all words - rhythmn, and hymn being two words which don't have vowels but the ever useful y instead.
