I would say when you are a Freshman in High School you could think about the college process. I would read about the different options like community colleges vs. public and private universities. I would also read about the requirements. If you are serious about a competitive college then you can motivate yourself to get good grades in high school. I would suggest you talk to a high school counselor as soon as you start high school then when your a Sophomore you can begin the process and have all of your SATs out of the way. Also you might consider early decision so that you can get your decision out of the way. You may also want to decide to take a year off after high school and then apply.
But if you begin as a Freshman and you are not sure about one option you still have 4 years ahead of you to decide. And Community college is always an option if you cannot decide since you can take a year off and apply to the CC at the start of every semester.
You may also want to think about your career so if you want to go to vocational school or go to college. Try to get some volunteer or paid hours in the career you would like to excel in. If you don't like it then you can choose another career. You can take the Myers Briggs test through a high school or college career center before you enroll.

I would think about it Freshman year. And start studying like SATs early. Don't screw up like I did and get credit withdrawl from missing too many days of school. Think about what you want to do with your life, your strengths and weaknesses. There are alot of vocational schools you can attend where you can get the skills you need and 9 time out of 10 you get college credits for completing them. So then you have a head start in college. Theres also a chance that you can get a wicked scholarship to the school of your choice. Plus, you can impress a scout that comes into the classroom time and time again testing your skills. They might give you an apprenticeship, and you can get the on-the-job training you need plus you get paid. Sounds sweet huh? This way you can start a career early by age 18 and make more than you can ever make working retail. To me retail is a scared straight program basically saying, stay in school or this is where you'll end up for the rest of your life.
Thats the best advice I can give you... Hope this helps.

College is too distracting for guys. With all the eye candy walking around campus, I can't seem to study hard enough to get the good grades. I used to get all As in High School and Community College and now I can't seem to score above a 75 on every exam that I take. I haven't failed any yet, but it still is bad when you only get Cs and Ds.

Beginning of Junior year
But your grades, even freshman year, are a huge part of it. But junior year is usually the first year they'll let you go on college visits (at my school, they let you miss up to 3 days to go on campus visits if you're a junior or senior).
Anybody who is stressing about college in 9th grade is only going to hurt themselves long-term.

seriously.....around 15/9th grade...
because u need to keep ur grades up all throughout your high school career so a college would even look to accept you because thats all they look at when u apply for college-ur grades...unless you go to community college which is what I am doing.....and then look for colleges junior year, and apply the middle of your senior year

I would recommend after sophomore year. Since most high schools offer AP and honors classes these years, and they also start offering dual credit classes. These classes can be competitive, so if you are serious about going to a good school, you need to consider what classes you need to take.

My kids started thinking about college as soon as they were old enough to understand that going to college is an important part of life.
