I have custody of two grandkids until they are 18, ages 9 and 13. I took early retirement at 64, their stepgrandpa is on social security disability. I received a check each month from the state for the kids. I have had these kids for 9 years. Can someone explain to me why they would not be elgible for benefits?

Any benefits due your grandchildren would be based on the income of their parents and whether or not their parents are living. The only entitlement for children is survivor's benefits due when a parent dies. This would be paid under certain circumstances until they are 18 or out of high school. They are not entitled to any benefits through you or their stepgrandfather.
