I work in the dine in restaurant industry and there's a place for to go food at my restaurant. I know that people in the restaurant industry complain about not getting tipped for to go and that they set up all the food themselves.

Meanwhile, people are saying that you don't need to tip out for carryout on pizzas since someone isn't delivering it to you.

What exactly are your thoughts on tipping on takeout at a dine in restaurant vs. carryout at a pizza place?

I always call in and order my pizza ahead of time for pick-up. If the pizza is ready within 15 minutes, when I get there and I can walk in then walk out without any waiting, I'll tip $2.00 ... if I have to wait or if for some reason I walk in and place an order, I don't tip.

Takeout at Dine-In restaurants get either a $1.00 or $2.00 tip depending on if the clerk at the window smiles alot and is sociable.

I used to be a waitress at a Pizza Hut for over a year and a half, and only the servers and drivers got tipped. The cooks just put the pizza in a box and put it on the warmer until the person came and got it. there wasn't any rushing back and forth to make the person happy, to seat, greet, get drinks for them, ect. Or any racing the clock to deliver it... So I don't think it's bad to not tip if you go to carry it out, that's why some peopel do carry outs, so they can get the food without having to tip....

No matter if it's delivered or I'm served. If the person is nice and doing a good job, it's always $5.00 or more. I guess It's because I know how if feels to serve several people and get barely anything for it, Just not right.... and tips go against paychecks too, and if the server doesn't get a good tip average,
they get fired. I even tip good on buffets because the server is still getting my drinks and cleaning up after me and bussing my table too...

Hopes this helps!

But when/if you do tip, see how busy they are and take into consieration the size of the order. It can take a bit longer if they're busy or if you ordered alot, so it's not their fault. But if they just twiddle their thumbs and don't care, then they don't deserve it.
They could also have a new cook too, so take that into consideration.
One night, a small party of people were getting really mean with me and snotty because we had this "dense" new cook and he kept making stuff wrong. I was running laps for these people to keep them happy and they got so bad where I finally had to say "I'm sorry, but I'm trying," which I think made them realize they were mean because they left me a 5.00 tip.
People need to understand that we have nothing to do with the food or the time it took to make the food. or if it's something else out of our control like if we're really busy or not....
I also wish that everybody could work in restaurants and retail for a couple months of their lives to learn the wonderful word, "compassion."

I have NEVER tipped at a carryout pizza place. If its delivered, then usually I tip around $5 extra. At a restaurant, if its just takeout, then I usually tip like $1 or so. They are not serving it to you and waiting on you hand and foot like waiters/waitresses do. As far as a sit-down restaurant, I tip about 30%.
