I am finishing a cloak out of cotton velour in a beautiful shade of jade. I love the material. However I was thinking about weatherproofing it and had several recommendations for Nikwax. Has anyone ever used weatherproofing? Did you like it? And do you know if cotton velour can be machine washed (as thats how you weatherproof it)? Thanks!

According to Nikwax site, it is fine for cotton. But there is no mention of velour fabrics.

I have used nikwax products before, but not on a cotton velour. My guess is it would work fine, but why not check with the Nikwax folks? They've always been helpful to me.

There are several products for waterproofing but I would not recommend waterproofing velour. It is washable though. I have 2 Outback Aussie Coats and they are treated and washed with a hose, never washed or dried.

If you have some scraps of the fabric, I would cut a swatch and sew up the edges so they don't fray and do a treatment on the swatch. If it comes out ok, then go ahead with the cloak.
