In my opinion, it's not the greatest movie ever. It's definitely high up on the list, but not #1.

I think so many people like it because of the characters. I mean, the actors did a tremendous job about making you care for the character they played. I mean, who didn't get sad when Sonny was ambushed?

I think the movie, once it gets to you care about the characters, plays on emotions. Once you care about Don Vito, you want to see Michael take care of him. Once Sonny is gunned down, you want to see the Corleone's get revenge.

Not only were the actors great, but the writing was superb. The movie has a long list of memorable quotes. These quotes have some great meaning behind them also, they're not cheesy one liners that come from summer popcorn movies.

Lastly, the movie is a kind of saga. It shows Michael's life and transformation. Michael goes from a soldier to the head of the Corleone family. It's kind of a struggle for Michael because he wants to run the family business legitimately, but for now, he is forced to continue to run things the way his father did.

As the story progress into Godfather 2 and 3, you see how he begins to change the business and how he begins to change himself.

I've looked at several lists, and it is on the list, but it isn't the greatest by a long shot. Actually, one has it at #7, which is absolutely ridiculous!

Someone points out the vengeance and violence, which is exactly why I despise this and the whole mobster adoration cult that has developed over time. Two thumbs down for this film based on an admittedly potboiler-type novel; Mario Puzo has admitted that it was written solely to make some money. But, this whole worship thing has grown up, which includes The Sopranos. I've watched the trilogy and found so much of it distasteful, with a smattering of good performances.

Some consider it to be. Personally I despise the "greatest" anything contest. It's a really good movie--great story, great characters, great acting, great music, great cinematography, great directing. It has all of the elements of a great movie, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference. I like the Godfather a great deal, but I don't consider it to be my favorite.
