The effect of the tooth whitening gel on the baby, if you're pregnant, is unknown. It is normal, during the bleaching process, to swallow a little bit of the gel. While this is safe for adults, pregnancy is such a delicate time for mother and baby that cosmetic dentists advise against teeth whitening while you are pregnant.

The tooth bleaching gel contains peroxide, which is just water with an extra oxygen atom. It's the oxygen in the bleach that gets your teeth white. Since oxygen is hardly a foreign substance, many cosmetic dentists assume that bleaching or whitening your teeth is a fairly harmless procedure. No studies have shown any harm from this peroxide tooth whitening. But pregnancy is such a delicate time, and there is so much we don't know about how substances affect babies during pregnancy, that it's wise to avoid anything unnecessary if its effect on pregnancy isn't known

In what to expect when you're expecting, they talk about teeth whiteners and white strips. Since you can get infections through your gums and into the bloodstream, it's probably best not to use whitestrips, since they're used near a source to your open bloodstream (and especially since a common pregnancy symptom is bleeding gums). Scientists haven't proven whether or not they can be harmful, so it's best to be safe than sorry.

The less chemicals you use, the better. Now it's been decided that even the anti bacterial hand cleaners are not a good idea for small children and babies...who knew that such a small amount of alcohol could give them alcohol poisoning? I wouldn't risk it just in case.

I would not use them. The mouth absorbs very quickly into the bloodstream. Is having your teeth a tiny bit whiter worth harming your baby? Not to me.
