I know many people that leave their pc's on all the time. Apparently they think it reduces the wear and tear of turning the computer on and off. If it's adequately ventilated and subsequently cooled there's no reason to turn it off... unless you find the end of the internet

If your computer is located in your home, you may choose never to turn it off. If you're using a cable modem or wi-fi, then the internet connection remains - thus the machine appears to be logged on via the internet.
Unfortunately, this also means it becomes more susceptible to being commandeered, but most people don't think about the security aspect of it.

You change your power settings all the way off, nothing sleeps, no screen saver. AOL will go ideal, you hit your power button on the monitor and leave the computer on. Wait 2 days and thats how long u will be logged in for. No point to it.

Yes, many leave their PC on until it dies. Which will be sooner for those that leave it on all the time.
Leaving a PC on is a waste of electricity, and bad for the environment.
Leaving a PC on causes it to fail sooner (months or years, not hours of use) than machines that are turned off when not in use. Reason? Because your PC is cooled by air. Dirty air. The inside of a PC attracts dust (static from electronic components), so the dirt in the air attaches to the components inside your PC, causing heat buildup and clogged fans, which leads to premature fan failure, which leads to more heat. Heat is a natural killer of electronic components. Leaving them turned on will decrease their life.
Components are not designed to last forever. Leaving them running constantly will cause them to fail in less TIME than PCs that are turned off when not in use. All those hours that the PC is not being used, yet is still powered on, wear out the components, especially those with moving parts.
Power surges from turning on a PC went away with the introduction of the ATX form factor, which used Soft Power to turn on a PC, as opposed to a 110v power switch attached to the front of the case on an AT computer. Therefore, there is absolutely no reason to leave a PC turned on.

Most computers have a power saving scheme that will automatically turn off the computer, or put it to sleep after a certain time of inactivity, especially laptops running on batteries. To actually change the settings on your own computer go to start->control panel-> power options. There are several default settings there, or you can just create your own depending on your needs.

It can be a large amount of things.
1. They were just too lazy at the moment to turn it off
2. they fell asleep at the computor
3. they felt it more convenient to just leave it on instead of having to start it up again
4. There is something possibley wrong with the computor that would cause it to crash or malfunction if it was restarted (I experience this problem)
5. They left it and forgot to turn it off
6. someone else used and left and forgot to turn it off
