I know he will forfeit his scholarship, but will he have to sit out the next year if he decides to go back to a college program. Does this happen very often?

Once you have played 1 game of Tier 1 Junior A (QHL< OHL, and QMHL), you are ineligible to play NCAA hockey as of October 1, 1979.

If you play Tier 2 Junior A, you retain your eligibility (this used to be called Junior 'B').

If after enrolling at an NCAA school, you withdraw and play Tier 2 junior A, you generally forfeit your scholarship completely (I know dozens of kids who had thios predicament)
