I have to say Archie Bunker. He was a bigot... but the show managed to explore a lot of crappy things because he was... and we could laugh at him for it. I don't think any show has been that well written since. Homer J. Simpson is a similar character... but Archie was one of a kind. That's a pretty big deal :)
