I worked as a waiter at CDB's Italian Pizza Restaurant, which was right down the street from a few fast food joints, where my two closest friends worked.
Right now, I work from home (75% of the time) doing various medical transcripting duties and head to work for a day or two per week, mainly to drop off customer information, etc ...
My friends are both managers, one at Wal-Mart and the other, at a local Dollar General store.

I'm an executive assistant. I worked up from being a secretary (actually, I just did filing and picked up lunch when they told me to) to being an office assistant, to being an administrative assistant to senior administrative assistant and now I work for the VP (edit: of the company, not the US or anything :)
The trick is to let people know you want to learn more. When I was in the first job, I actually paid my own money to take a course on Microsoft Office at the community college. Then I actually started going to college, but also would always tell employers I would love to go to any kind of training that would help me advance my career.
The other thing I did was help people as much as I could with the things I did know, and keep trying to learn more about them online. I would help people with Excel and PowerPoint documents (which are part of Microsoft Office) and then if I didn't know the answer, I'd use help, or go online and search till I did know the answer.
The hard part was taking that first job cause it paid minimum wage, and at the fast food joint I was earning two dollars more. But I knew I didn't want to work the drive thru for the rest of my life!!!

I'm a cost-accountant for a large publicly traded corporation.
My fast-food experience was incredibly valuable to all my subsequent jobs.
