This depends on your state, but for the most part the easy answer is yes. If a payor (the person who is supposed to pay) fails to pay for a certain period, usually 120 days or so, that is a felony. Every 120 day period (check with your state or county enforcement agency to find out how long in your state) that there is no payment is another felony count. Each count has its own jail penalty, which can be added together if/when the person is charged and prosecuted.

DANG ! $40,000 behind ? How was this allowed to fall this far into the abysses of non-payment ?? You will probably get a reward for turning this person in for non-payment of $40,000.00 in back child support. Check the post office & your milk cartons for his / her "wanted poster". Of course if the child caregiver doesn`t report it then it will never be paid. Also; You must go through the court system to make sure payments are made , as the court will do the collecting & keep track of them for you ~~~

They sure can. My cousin has been in jail dozens of times for just that. Since child support is a court order, failure to pay is contempt of court, which means that the punishment is at the judges discretion.
State government departments now share information to help locate "deadbeat" parents.

Yes, even women that cannot keep up with their child support payments are thrown into the can.

If anyone out there is making child support payments, hear me now. SAVE ALL of your receipts.

My son was paying all of his support money and they were not keeping an accurate record of it. I found a lot of receipts and that he had paid but it has been a mess. They cheated him and charged interest besides,

The child support division charges interest compounded for collection and it looks like they get a cut for it.

So heads up guys and don't get in that situation...Save your receipts...keep your records...get a receipt for every payment even if its for $10.00.

First of all, their tax returns would be seized. Passports denied or revoked. Depending on the state, "Dead Beat Dad" laws apply and yes, the person can be arrested for failure to support a dependent child.

Yes. I went through that and when I finally had enough of the promises and lies, I put his butt in jail.
All dead beats need to spend a little time in jail.

YES!!!!! Call the police, and have him arrested. I know because my now ex-husband was always running away from the cops when he was a younger man, because the cops were always after him for not supporting his son! He eventually left the state, Texas, so NEVER paid for his crime! It is a crime!
Too bad for me, I didn't know about what he did to his son, BEFORE I married the F blank!

I'm surprised that they aren't already in jail if they haven't paid that much...some people end up in jail for 5,000 of non payment.
