In the 4-4-2 formation, the number 8 is traditionally used for a central attacking midfielder.
The number 10 is for a striker.
Rooney has been playing more as a striker this season.
When Rooney signed for Man Utd the n.o 10 was Ruud Van Nistelrooy's.

According to the Man. U. website, Rooney changed his number because some of the greatest players have worn no. 10. He used Denis Law, a previous no. 10 for Man. U., as an example.

Law is one of Old Trafford's most iconic figures. Law was also a forward and averaged about one goal every two games.

Here are two links. The top one is the article talking about the number change, and the bottom one is a profile for Denis Law.

#10 is a number usually reserved for the best player on the team, usually a striker/forward or midfield playmaker. When you look back some of the greatest names in football wore or wear 10 (eg Zidane, Ronaldhino, Maradona, Bergkamp, Totti, Pele, this list goes on)
So maybe he wanted to be associated with greatness, rather than make a name for himself with another number. Beckham made #7 associate with him, Henry is associated with #14 so he didnt have to do that. Doubt he'll be remembered as a #10 though he made his name already as #8.
So to the 2nd poster who worries his jersey is valueless now you got it wrong. Buy a #10 to wear and frame the #8, I bet it'll gain value over time.

i have absolutely no idea...but as a man utd fan i think its a farce that they can change there number when they feel like it!! why didnt he do it at the beginning of the season or even wait until the end of the season to do it???

the football shirts are expensive enough as they are nevermind forking out £30+ for a number 8 rooney shirt for your child just 2 days prior to him changing numbers!! yes...it happened to me, i bought my son it for his birthday! 2 days later its worthless!!!
