In my humble opinion, just because your doctor thinks the baby "might" be larger than expected is NOT a good reason to go for a c-section. It's still major surgery and studies have shown it still has more risks even than a VBAC.

First of all, he could very well be wrong. Doctors are often off with their measurements prior to birth. You can't treat his guess as the gospel truth.

Secondly, even if the baby is large, that doesn't demand a cesaerean. Women deliver large babies vaginally every day with no problems. The risk in VBAC is uterine rupture. The size of the baby will in NO way affect that particular risk. The size of your pelvis WILL.

So I would either insist upon a trial VBAC, or find a doctor or midwife who will offer you the VBAC.

If the doctor thinks a C-Section would be better then thats what you should do. It is better to have one scheduled than to have to have an emergency C-Section. Also there are alot of complications in delivering a large baby anyway but especially so in a VBAC. You can push for hours and the baby could get stuck in the birth canal and then you'd have to have one anyway. Also if the baby should get stressed during pushing and bp drops then they'll have to deliver by C-section. If you are already scheduled and have the surgery, these are complications that you can avoid. Also just because you had a rough time with the 1st doesn't mean you will with this baby. It could be a breeze this time now that you are an expert. Really I know you're disappointed but if this is safer for you and baby then it really is the best choice.

I am attempting my first v-bac, and it is tough when you don't have the support of your OB. My only suggestion is to ask if you can attempt a "controlled" vbac and then have the c-section if it doesn't work. My doctor wants vbac's controlled, so she will "induce" me, probably early 37-38weeks by stretching membranes and then breaking my water. I am hoping for the best, but you never know maybe he would be open to an idea like this. Did he do your first VBAC? I would think if he did that would be supportive of this. The other more extreme option would be find another OB, but it is pretty late in the game for that. Good luck though, it's tough when your doc is not on the same page!

My sister is a childbirth educator. According to her, having a big baby does not necessarily increase your chances of problems during a VBAC. And, they can never tell you ahead of time whether your baby is "too big" for a natural birth because your pelvis spreads during labor to let the baby pass through - there is no telling how much it will spread until you're already there. It really is best for you and the baby to labor and see if you can go natural first before doing a c-section, rather than just scheduling the c-section, because babies who go through a little bit of labor do better than babies who were born through c-section with no labor - particularly regarding their respiratory function.

You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. If you don't want to have a repeat c-section, get a second opinion. You might be lucky enough to find a doctor who cares enough about allowing women to make their OWN childbirth choices that they will take you on this late in pregnancy.

Talk it over with your husband and see how the two of you feel as a couple about another VBAC. I did it twice after my second child was an emergency CS. The last two were large 9 1/2 lbs babies and I did fine VBACing it.

You make that decision based on how you feel not on how the doctor feels unless their is a health issue for you or baby. Most of the time, it seems that a quick CS is just that...quick. the doctor is in and out and done.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW BABY IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS.

I think this is so strange to hear because my c section was BLISS. I guess you can try but you may just end up regretting it once you've tried in agony for hours and hours you may be begging for a c section. Whatever went wrong with your first c section you should try voicing that with your doctor to maybe make this one more enjoyable. You can also plan out the pain management by saying you don't care how groggy you have to be as long as you feel NO PAIN. Either way you will be with it enough to enjoy your time.

I guess maybe I am jaded after pushing for so long and finding out I can not birth a baby vaginally unless they broke my pelvis, but I found a c section to be such a GIFT! I'd have to be insane to WANT to deliver vaginally.

I totally agree with Mary Rose!!

The only thing I have to add is to make a decision and stick with it. If you want to do the VBAC and you didn't have a problem with it the last time, go for it! If you decide to listen to this doctor, don't worry too much. I can tell you from experience that planned c/s are MUCH easier than one that is done after hours of labor. They aren't anything to be scared of.

I can also tell you that the reason the doctor wants to do a c/s for a "big" baby is to lessen his chances of being sued. He is trying to cover his own butt and wants to make sure that it is you pushing for this and not him pushing This is something to you to decide for you and not for him to push you to.

Good luck and Congrats.

See if you can try going VBAC and if neccessary have a c-section. Also check to see if he is even allowed to do VBAC's. I know depending on the doctor, their insurance or the hospital they deliver at won't allow them. My friend told me in her state that in the metro city area that there is only one hospital that allows VBAC. Her doctor doesn't even deliver at that hospital.

The choice is yours. If you insist on a trial VBAC you can have it. They can not accurately estimate a baby's size.

You may need to seek a second opinion. Or ask your Dr to induce early if the baby is that big...say 38 weeks, and let you try to deliver naturally. Set a time frame on the amount of labout time with your Dr, and if you haven't progressed enough, you will opt for a c-section.
