It's different for each woman, but typically your first labor will be longest (8-24 hours) and the active phase of labor is pretty intense and painful.

The transition and pushing phase of labor are also very demanding on the body because contractions hurt more and get closer apart with not much resting in between.

For me, personally, "natural labor" hurt like hell. I felt my body was being split in two from the inside and I cried and screamed. My husband was worried because I was so upset, and I became afraid that the baby would be stuck and the pain would never stop. But my midwife coached me through it and helped me change positions until suddenly my daughter crowned.

Despite, the pain and intensity, I was at peace when it was all over and very glad to hold my baby. And there were no drugs to wear off on me or baby.

My actual delivery took 2 1/2 hours...that's from the time I started pushing to the time she was born. Every woman is different. I did kind of a natural birth. I had an IV that helped control the pain of the contractions...I wasn't going to get that until I had a contraction that made my toes curl, but by the time I was ready to push, the drug had worn off, and the pain really wasn't that bad. It was a major relief to be able to start pushing. After the baby was out, and they told I should urinate then have a shower, I was in major pain. Urinating hurt worse then the entire time I was in labor. The shower felt good though. All in all, no matter how much pain the labor is, the end result is totally worth it

I delivered my last two naturaly.
It hurts like heck i won't lie.
The first time i was in total shock and didn't know how to manage my contractions or the pain and was crying, screaming and attempting to jump of the bed.
I was very scared.
But i delivered my 3rd in May.
This time i managed my breathing better and didn't scream or cry. I still attempted to jump of the bed.
When the baby crowns i can not explain that feeling.
It burned and yes hurt, i could feel her whole head and shoulders and knew i'd spread open 5 times my natural and normal size and that scared me to peices.
But all in all, my 2nd took one hour to deliver from being at 9cm dialted and my 3rd took 30 minutes from being 9cm dialated.
It is hard, there is no sugar coating natural delivery at all.
Some can manage, some can't. I just wanted it that way because when the baby is born, they are perfectly round, barely bruised and swollen and more aware as oppose to a baby being delivered by meds.
First labor with meds lasted 28 hours.
2nd labor natural lasted 10 hours
3rd labor natural lasted 6 hours

Ok, I'm gonna be honest...I have 4 children, and it is honestly the worst pain, I would have chosen to die at one point if it ment the pain would stop...however after the baby is born it is so worth the pain, however I have been on the other end of childbirth, I was in the room with a friend when she had my godson and it was such a beautiful experience, I know it's messy and yes quite gorry at times but you will look through it all and see a real miracle when you see your beautiful niece or nephew come into this world...Good luck to you and your sister....a little tip tell her to get the drugs!!!!

it is really very painful, she's going to have to breath through the pain and try to keep positive because the pain has a purpose and though it gets worst it will end and her little angel will be there. delivery is alot of fluids, possibly some poop and alot of grunting and screaming haha. it can take quite a while if this is her first child, i was in labor for 36 hours before i had an emergency csection. please do not say what my mother said when she tried to stay with me the second night i was in labor "do you have to be so loud?" hehe. be supportive and give backrubs and footrubs, she'll really appreciate it!

I had my daughter naturally and plan to have my next child naturally as well. Originally I wanted some type of drug but my labor went so fast (1cm to 9.5cm within 20 min) they did not have time to give me anything. A friend of mine had her first child a month before I had my first and she was in labor for 3 days....scared the crap outta me lol. I know with my daughter I cried and screamed but for me once I was able to actually push it made alot of the pain go away.

My mom had me naturally and I was out within 45 minutes she said. Also, people have told me that getting medications can actually prolong labor and that things like epidurals dont even work for some people.
Also, there are some ways to make it less painful for her, like sitting in a tub of warm water, or walking.

Well I did not have a natural birth, but after they broke my water it took the doctors like 20 minutes to give me my epidural. I had two contractions without the drugs and that is probably the worst pain I have ever felt (was in tears). Cudos to those who do give birth naturally...I could never do it.

It's great that you are being so supportive to your sister!!
Natural delivery is seriously painful & you're probably going to have a hard time watching your sis in so much pain, but since you are going to be her support, try to remain calm and say things to help her calm down. Keep reminder her to breath.

It hurts a TON. Worst pain in the world. As for how long...that varies. Took me 12 hours with 4 hours of pushing with my son, and took me 3 hours and 15 minutes altogether with my daughter. I recommend the epidural. I wouldn't have a tooth pulled without being numbed, I won't have a baby without an epidural. LOL But, that being said, every woman has to do what she feels is right for herself and for her baby. As for "how" the baby is delivered....well, she pushes it out her vagina with her feet high up in the air and a look of "whoever did this to me must die" on her face.
