Are ketones during pregnancy dangerous? Can you get rid of them once you have them?

I'm just entering my second trimester. I've heard about people getting them toward the end of their third trimester....does it make a difference when?

Ketone bodies are produced by the body as a response to 'starvation' (which doesn't have to be a long term state). They provide a source of energy to the brain when there is no glucose.

Ketones are what people on the atkins diet strive for because your body will only produce them when you have no carbohydrates inside you and you have used up your glucose stores.

This could have been the result of morning sickness, or just not having had enough to eat that day. Make sure that you eat regularly and have plenty of healthy snacks to keep your sugar levels up.

And very important - stay hydrated!

"Ketones usually occur because you are either:

not eating enough total calories
going too long between meals
skipping meals/snacks
nauseous, not eating well/throwing up, and so not getting enough food for energy
so insulin-resistant from hormones that your body cannot access the blood sugar that's there"

I began spillign ketones at 38 or 39 weeks pregnant with my second but delivered a healthy baby boy at 42 weeks-although he DID weigh 9 pounds 3.
