When I went into the hospital I was not dialated at all so, they had to insert a pill to help me dialate. If this is necessary, they will insert one into your cervix, wait 3 hrs or so, and see if they need to do another. I had to have 3 inserted so, as you can tell, this can be a long process. I didn't even start dialating until the 2nd pill. After you start dialating they will start you on petocin.
They just scheduled me to go into the hospital late one night so they could start the induction then (since it takes a while). I got there at midnight.
I honestly never made it to the petocin stage because after 22 hrs of labor they went ahead a did a c-section. But it is nothing to worry about. They dr's and nurses at the hospital are very helpful and will walk you through each step. Just be sure to bring games, magazines, etc. so you will have something to do until you start feeling the contractions.

Definitely find out why the hurry to induce. .... Don't rush what should happen naturally.

I was induced with my third child, he was about 4 days "overdue". They admit you into the hospital and then they start the IV and then the took a pill and inserted into the cervix. I am not real sure what it does, I think it causes it all to soften and stuff. After about 8 hours on the petocin drip, I am having a few minor contractions. The doc decides to break by water and when he does, the cord came out with the fluid. I had what is called a prolapsed cord and if I had tried to deliver my son, he would have died in moments. I had to be rushed in for an emergency C section. The doctor had to ride on my bed holding my son's head off of the cord. Everything turned out alright, but it was extremely scary. I think that if the doc had given me a couple of more days, things might have been different.

If there isn't a medical reason to induce .... try to be patient.

don't be scared. what will happen is that the doctor will schedule you to be at the hospital a certain time and day and you'll be there. They will start you an IV and give you petocin. It induces labor. Your contractions will start maybe a half an hour after wards. They say that being induced hurts worse, but don't be scared. I was induced and my contractions didn't hurt too awful bad. I was there overnight, had already dialated to a 1 so they gave me the petocin in the morning at like 8:00 I had my son at 9:28 that night 2 hours after they broke my water. When they break your water it will help to progress the labor. I was dialated to a 4 when they broke mine and within 2 hours I was having my baby.

why is your Dr in a rush to induce you? Question his reasons, unnecessary inductions can lead to unnecessary c-sections.

An induction is a simple process. They will likely insert a drug into your vagina to start dilation. If you are already dilated that may skip this step. You will have an IV, with a fluid drip to keep you hydrated. They will give a dose of pitocin through the IV to start contractions,. They will hurt, but its not THAT bad at first. If it gets too intense (a real side effect of pitocin) you may want an epidural. After that its the same as any delivery, with until you are dialated to 10 then push the baby out. Good luck.

I was induced at 38 weeks.

The plan was to induce me on a tuesday morning . My doctor had me admitted the night before, to insert a drug called cervidil . It is inserted vaginally, and designed to help thin and dilate your cervix. You feel a slight pinch when its inserted, it stings for a second, and then you don't feel anything. Once my cervix was thinned,my body naturally went into labor before being induced . I woke up around 6 that morning having contractions. Because i had gone into labor on my own, the doctor allowed me to wait, and see how labor progressed on it's own, before giving me pitocin (the drug used to induce) Around 2pm that afternoon, the doctor decided labor was not progressing , and started an i.v. of pitocin. At this point i was 4 cm dilated. Around 4 15 he broke my water. within five minutes i was 8 cm, and began pushing around 430. My daughter was born at 4 53.

Yes, an induction occurs in a hospital. They need to monitor both you, and the baby for signs of distress.

I was induced at 39 weeks. The gave me the prostaglandin gel up onto my cervix...twice in a 8 hour period...sometimes that is all you need to go into labour...but it didn't work for me, then I had the pitocin drip to get the labour started as the gel made my water break. If you have to have the pitocin...make sure that you have talked to your Dr about pain control as the contractions will hit a lot harder with the pitocin.

well first of all you go to the hospital usually to have this done...they can do a number of things, break your water ( doesn't hurt) hook you up to an IV with pitocin to start and strengthen contractions, and they can strip your membranes, causes you to efface and dilate quickly. None of this other than the patocin is painful...and the only reason the patocin is, is because of the often very strong contractions they produce.
