Michael Chertoff has defended building a gate on the Mexico border by saying:

"Illegal migrants really degrade the environment. I’ve seen pictures of human waste, garbage, discarded bottles and other human artifact in pristine areas," Chertoff said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "And believe me, that is the worst thing you can do to the environment."

Absolutely agree, and it's heartening to me to read his assessment. I used to live in Tucson (and later, in Chandler), AZ and there were plenty of pristine areas of the border country that were just cesspools of discarded jackets, diapers, bottles, backpacks, food, beer and liquor bottles. I mean, it was disgusting.

One glance at that crap, and you're going to have a different opinion about welcoming in illegals.

Chertoff does have a small point.

However, anyone who has ever visited the Angeles National Forest north of LA can attest that American citizens degrade the environment just as badly.

I've never seen a national forest used as a garbage dump before. It was a disgusting place to visit and camp and I won't be back.

He makes a valid point. I agree. The desert and other remote locations near the border aren't going to see any cleaning crews coming through. I imagine the illegals bring food and water with them, and just discard it in the wild.

the human race has degraded the world;what's your point. And I'm confused;how would a fence 4500 miles long not be an environmental degradation.Surely, some migratory critter would be impacted by such an obstacle.
And yes the fence/wall would be at least 4500 miles long, and that is the conservative estimate. FYI,our border doesn't follow a straight line in case you haven't noticed.and what about those pesky Canadians.

Yes I do agree. The desert is a fragile thing and there are trails of trash where the illegals have been dropping their stuff.

I'm sure a wall on the border will keep the illegals out.
And I'm certain that only illegal aliens litter.

Please...

I, TOO, AGREE.
However, since the subject has been broached, how about cleaning up WASHINGTON, D.C. ???
We need to remove and sweep clean the political scatology, the soiled rhetoric, the discarded truths, the toilet tissue mentality !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree they degrade the environment, but they do greater harm by taking american jobs and lowering wages in the US.

Maybe the Sierra Club can make a paved path for them with some nice landscaping and trash cans.

But they would need someone to do the landscaping for them.

Oh.
