Read Jared Diamonds book "Guns, Germs, and Steel" The first couple of chapters deal with that question if I remember right. Great book, Thick enough to choke a goat.

Warn climates give more free time to dream and think, were cold climates the populations spend more time trying to stay warm and building shelters, dry climates make it harder to fine food and water. You can take it from there.
