If you are asked to "solve" a function

f(x) = ax + b
or
g(x) = ax² + bx + c

The question is imprecisely stated. Usually the person is looking for the zeros of the function. Set the equation equal to zero and solve for x. On the graph the zeros are the points where the line/curve crosses the x axis.

The place or coordinate that the function intercept the x-axis.
For instance. x^2 -3x +2 would intercept in (1,0) and (2,0).
