So I'm 4 days overdue already and my doc said he doesn't suggest I go a week being late bc it increases my risk of a c-section. I heard that being induced can put you into even more pain? I am trying my best to ride this out and not to get induced bc his method of induction is new to the hospital. He uses Cytotec + Pitocin, while other doctors just use Pitocin. We have even asked nurses at the hospital about Cytotec and they said that it has many side effects including abnormally reducing the baby's heart rate. I also did some research on it and it's usually used for abortions, not delivery. I told my doc that if I had to be induced, I'd like him to just use Pitocin, but he insists that I use Cytotect + Pitocin bc it speeds up delivery using both. He doesn't seem like he wants to comply with my wishes at all and is very set in his ways. I tried to get a new OB, but everyone is booked up. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?

I also asked my doc about breaking my waters to get things going if he must induce, but he doesn't want to do it that way, it feels like he only wants to use Cytotec + Pitocin. Why is he being so rude? Don't I have a say in this? It's my body after all, right?

NO NO NO and NO. Tell him he may not use any pitocin on you.

Stimulate your nipples, stay active, have sex, walk and do squats, have your membranes stripped, break your water, and if nothing else works use cervidel or cervidex.

Anything in the pitocin family makes your labor harder, longer and more dangerous, and it has a much higher risk of fetal distress and emergency c-section.

Cervidel causes your cervix to dilate, this causes labor to progress WITHOUT causing powerful delivery strength contractions before their time. Beyond that, if it become too intense too soon they can remove the medication from your cervix and you can progress for a while on your own.

You have a right to what treatment and medication you get. He cannot use pitocins on you unless you let him. He'll push for it, and insist, but you will too. Its just not natural, and its just too risky.

First off, good luck, hopefully baby decides to show up before you have to induce. Cytotec is still used with many doctors. I have a friend who was induced twice, once only with pitocin, larger amounts, and the second time with cytotec and less pitocin, she said the cytotec + pitocin was a much better experience, her birth with these combo went very well. My doctor who will be inducing me because of a VBAC, chooses to Strip membranes and break my water. After that pitocin if I don't progress. I think that every doctor has a different procedure that they are comfortable with for induction, probably because they have had the most experience with it. I wish you the best of luck!

If you only use the Pitocin it is far more likely that you will end up having a C-section. The Cytotec helps thin out the cervix to induce labor as opposed to going directly to contractions. BIDMC uses both often, with good results. I did both, unfortunately ended up with a C section but I had a HUGE baby that couldn't descend. The doctors I use are known as the Doctors Doctors in and around Massachusetts, and the labor and maternity ward at BIDMC have been given a 5 star rating, so I don't think you will have a problem with it.

HOWEVER, if you are very against using both, you must take a stand against your doctor. He may not do anything without your consent. Ask your partner/friend/birthing partner to go with you to see him, and support you in the decision.

you have the right to refuse anything!!! If he will not listen to you, cancel the induction. As long as you are not having any health problems and the baby is doing well then you don't need the induction anyway. I am unfamiliar with cytotec, I would assume that he would not use it if there were any adverse effects, but its still your choice. Make it very plain to him that you will not consent to the drug, period.

A pitocin induced labor is not necessarily more painful, just more intense. Your contractions come on strong, rather than the gradual build up that you get from natural labor.

A doctor must do what you ask of him if it is possible. It will be considered malpractice later if some mishap could happen (praying it wont) and you told the doctor what you were asking him to do and he still didn't oblige. Just consider what you think is best for your baby and stick with it. I never knew Cytotec was used for abortions and would seem like the last thing to use. If nothing else get the C-section, would rather have a scar to show you loved your baby instead of having the regret of other possibilities fall on your conscience.

Please try to make yourself be patient! My first labor went so badly that I learned the hard way that induction isn't good - the drug they use isn't even approved by the FDA until 42 weeks and lots of professionals call pitocin the #1 overused drug in america. 40 - 60 % of inductions end up casing fetal distress and c-sections and it almost always takes longer and hurts ten times worse!!! If you can just make yourself wait your body will go into labor when it naturally is ready... and no drugs generally means no complications. Americans are really bad at waiting - after all, everything else in life is so scheduled that we are a privileged society! What's a few days more, heck, what's a week more of waiting?

You absolutely have every right to refuse! You can simply not show up for any more appointments, and just come to the hospital when you are in labor. They cannot refuse to treat you. Just play dumb "oh gosh, I forgot all about it, oh well I'm in labor now anyway! Teehee!" I also strongly recommend you try to find a doula, even this late in the game you may be able to find someone. Try bellywomen.net for free or low cost doulas. I have the feeling you're going to have a hard fight for the birth you want with this hospital. I don't suppose you've thought of a last minute change of providers or even an unassisted birth?

Best of luck, and happy labor vibes!

you do have a say. however that is a long time to go over. my doc would have only let me go 5 days! allot of it has to do with your health. I had the pitocin and went into labor, because of pre elcampsia. a c-section is not that bad. I had one and had i known going in i would have elected a c-section.
anyway you should educate yourself about the drugs and make sure it is what you want.

Some docs just don't want to be 'late'. they think your pregnancy should go with tHIER schedule, not yours. It's not that there is neccisarily anything wrong, but he just wants to hurry it up and get on to the next patient so he can get more money. the doctor at my birth told my mom my heart rate was dropping, and I had to be born 2 weeks early. Well, my mom got me born naturally, but... well, He was very insitent I was dying or something. Which I wasn't. I was perfectly healthy.
