"Oh Captain, My Captain" was written right after the Civil War. It is metaphorical about the Lincoln's death after the war. Search for phases that suggest irony. The captain is Lincoln and the sea and the storms symbolize the Civil War. While reading this again, remember, most people die in a war, not after it.

"From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead."

"O Captain..." is fairly straight forward. No hidden Meaning. It is all about Lincoln and the Civil War.

Well, I know it's about Abraham Lincoln, so that may shed some light on it for you. You should search "O Captain My Captain" on Wikipedia.
