I have an 89 Pathfinder that just wont start. It ran fine a couple of days ago and now it just wont start. It turns over but wont start. It smells of gas after trying to start it. I pulled the air filter housing off and tried to start it and there was an ignition out of the top when I stopped trying to start it.

Any suggestions of what my problem might be?

So i just tried it again and just puttering around to see if i could get further into the problem and it sputtered a bit and then started. It sounds fine once its running but just sputtered a bit before starting. Possibly running a bit fast in idle. It is a manual by the way. Thanks for any suggestions you can make.

Broken timing belt and the distributor is not turning. Ok that is about the worse thing that can happen. Pull the coil wire out just a bit have someone crank the engine multible sparks is a sign that the timing belt is turning the distributor No spark means either the coil is bad the ignitor failed or the distributor is not turning. Take the dist. cap off carnk over the engine see if the rotor turns... Does it sound different like it is cranking faster than normal? And You thought you could celebrate your trucks 20th birthday.

Unfortunately, you have an interference type engine that most likely bends the valves when the timing belt breaks. Your belt was supposed to be changed every 60,000 miles, so if it was never changed, there's a good chance it broke and the vehicle may not be worth fixing, especially if you have the original automatic transmission in it. A new remanufactured engine from http://www.jasperengines.com with a 3 year, 75,000 mile warranty is available, but too expensive for your older vehicle. The total cost of a junk yard engine with installation would be about $2000 or so. http://www.junkyarddog.com http://www.car-parts.com

Sounds like the carb is flooded- how's the carburetor float?? Has the carb ever been rebuilt? Sounds like it might need to be rebuilt.

Careful -- Air filters are Flame Arrestors, so since your carburetor backfired a nice fat flame, keep the air filter on and let it do its job until you get the carb fixed, and do not drive without it.

Do you pump the throttle if it won't start? this is what is causing the carburetor flood and "Back Fire". Carburetor needs rebuild, after the rebuild it should be fine. May also need a timing belt.
