Peter
You Sir, deserve a hand salute for this observation !! ☼
I have suffered through his performances too many times to count -- simply because of pressures from others that are basing a view on what some critic somewhere EVIDENTLY has been paid to write "glowing" remarks about !!
I, myself, just simply Don't "get it" --- and am very glad that I am not in this observation totally by myself !!
I not only think they should take his Oscar back -- I think that they should charge him a very high "rental" for the time that he has HAD it !! ------ Oh, and, I want at least $ 150 (usd) back for at least SOME of the cash paid out to sit through his garbage !!

He sells tickets. Believe it or not, the movie industry is interested in making a profit. Nicholas Cage has a strong following, is passionate about his work, shows up on time, gets the job done, and doesn't drag a lot of his personal life into the production. If all of the above were true except the fact that he didn't sell tickets, it wouldn't mean beans. People who sell tickets and aren't a complete and total pain in the ummmm - Neck? are pretty much sought after by the entertainment industry however, and Nick Cage fills the bill.
You are entitled to your opinion about him certainly, but try to accept the fact that for now anyway, you are in the minority. The only suggestion I could make is to try out the business for yourself. Get yourself a degree, audition for a few roles and show him how to do it right. I think you're going to find that it all comes down to one incontrovertible fact though. Did you sell tickets? Did you make 'em hungry for the popcorn? Did you fill the seats or just please the critics? There is something to the old cliche:
"I don't know nothing, but I know what I like!"
Instead of laboring over the injustice of his popularity, why not try and figure out what it is that makes him so essential to a box office hit. If you can figure out that one detail, you can be the next Speilberg! Hope this helps.

He does NOT have it factor. He has creepy factor. He's ugly too.
I agree with you. Yuck yuck yuck.
I don't get it. I think it's because his family is in Hollywood so he was able to get a start and build a name, like Drew Barrymore. But she's cute, he aint. It's a legacy thing. I think it's his connections. He usually does a bad job acting, but he has his moments that have been able to sustain him. I think one of his secrets is picking cutting-edge, serious films like Adaptation. Movie choice is key.

They want to suck up to his uncle, I guess.
I am with you 100%. He is just a terrible actor. Nobody has ever been more wooden than he was in "City of Angels." I would rather fall in love with an actual plate than Seth Plate.
Besides, he's famous now; putting him in your movie guarantees at least a modicum of interest.

Your opinion is not shared by the industry who awarded him an oscar nor by the public who flock to his films. And that is why he is a star.

Your question made me laugh. Thank you.
(I have often wondered that myself, but then I'll find myself watching a film he's in.)

Well, that is entirely subjective. He is an Oscar winner, so someone must like him!

I'd see anything as long as he is in it!
He's just got the "it" factor.
