I came to Yahoo to ask questions on how to fix my USB port because it wont detect any USB cables. But instead I got an reply from some guy on yahoo answers that claims he can fix my computer from home and needs just my IP address in order to fix it. Can he really fix my computer from where ever he is or will he hack my computer and gather private data?

If you set up remote assistance or remote desktop he can login to your computer, but he'll need your IP address to find you in a sea of others. This will change periodically and if you have a router you may have to modify the ports on that to point to your computer. If you have ANY sort of queezy feeling about this..think twice and lay down until the feeling goes away.

From my knowledge, you can't fix a USB Port with an IP address. It seems like this might be a likely hacker. My suggestion for you would be to contact Yahoo privately and discuss details.

I hope that helps.

NO!!! I wouldn't trust this guy because I don't think that's even possible, I mean an ip address is like your home address. So how could that help? On the other hand, knowing your ip address could let him find out info about you/your computer. So don't give it out and report him to yahoo!!!

Personaly I would not have your Yahoo Messenger linked from Yahoo Answers and Questions...awhile back some people were getting robot messages that were exploiting the system somehow and they were getting like "hello1", hello 2" showing up on there computer....and I noticed that the people who were asking those questions had their Y/A account linked to Yahoo Messenger...... Is it possible for a hacker to find your IP address from Yahoo answers.....anything is possible...but I doubt it.......their servers are pretty secure......

There is a fair chance the person can fix it. It really depends upon how you are configured and if he can get past your router (assuming you have a router in your system; if you have no router he can get to your pc once you give him your pulic IP address and log on passwords).

However, why would someone volunteer to do this when he could get paid to do it? He may be noble and helpful, but I would be reluctant as you are.

Once he has access to your pc, which is what he is really wanting, who knows what he will dig into and take with him. You would put yourself at risk. You do not really know who this person is nor how to find him in the event you need to in the future.

I suggest you deal with more conventional repair people.

He need your IP Address to gain access to your computer. It's called Remote Access. You will need to grant him permission to access your PC by accepting an invitation that he will send you. Big Time corporations use it when the IT dept is in another state and they need access to your PC. You will be able to see him as he takes control of your computer while he fixes things. Once he disconnects he can't access your PC again unless you re-authorize that connection again.

If you use wireless internet, your IP address always change. But I suggest NOT to give it to him. An IP address can show where you live and what kind of internet you use.

don't give out your IP address. He won't fix it remotely, but definately can install some bad programs onto your computer.

however, there is one program called logmein which allow IT professionals to fix computer remotely.
ask him if he knows that program, if he won't response don't give your IP address.
