The people are protesting their military run government hoping for a more democratic system. Burma voted in a national election putting into power a leader chosen by the people when the military took over with massive force and instituted a military run government. Though it is a very wealthy country with many natural resources, its people are poor and starving because the military leaders hoard the country's wealth for themselves paying for million dollar weddings for their daughters. The government is killing the protesters to instill fear in its people and lying about the number of dead. Because the Buddhist monks make up the majority of the protesters and pose the majority of the threat to the government of Burma, the military is targeting these peaceful protesters and murdering them in the streets. Houses are being searched and people hiding their revered monks are being imprisoned.

Myanmar(old name Burma). It is under military rule.Denial of human rights especially to Buddhists is the current issue.Myanmar is having oil resources. The neighbour China is having an eye on it.USA has recently only found the importance of Myanmar. If no resistance is offered by West,India being silent,on the pattren of Chinese occupation of Tibet,Myanmar also may become part of Greater China.
China will have an access to Indian Ocean and that will upset existing global military strategy/equations of USA

M & M is right, you have in Burma a gang of murdering army officers running the country. They are encouraged in their cruelty by China,India and France who wish to exploit the resources of the country for their own benefit and don't care what these military thugs get up to. What the people want is the restoration of the democratically elected Head of Government, the Nobel Prizewinner,Aung San Suu Kyi.

I know the military government increased fuel prices resulting in a mass protest as it always does in third world countries. But I wanted to know more. So I googled BURMA GAS RESERVES . and Guess what? It says Burma has the fourth largest gas reserves in the world. So I wonder. Are external forces causing unrest there? Remember Iraq?

My parents lived there and my siblings were born there, in Maymyo. Both my parent's families lived there, and I lost both my grandmothers during the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. Terrible things have happened under the present Dictatorship, and everyone hopes that there will be a happy outcome for the Burmese people.
