You can get copies of birth certificates from the Office of the Registrar/Recorder in the county where the birth was registered.

The other answers are incorrect. You can get them at any time, and not only at the time of birth. Most maternity hospitals will allow you to register a birth and give you a certificate at the time, but refer you to the Registrar/Recorder at later dates.

You have to contact the bureau of vital staticts in the county where you were born. For example I live in Southern California, I had to get the information needed and send a check. My area was Los Angeles..Also google that question for the state and city where this person was born, you will call and they will tell you what to do

Honest ones you get from the county in which the person was born, usually with some kind of identification. And counties have gotten a lot more uptight about releasing info since they are used in identity theft - I couldn't get data on my great aunt born in 1876!
Dishonest ones - I don't think this is appropriate.

You can't buy one.
