I have a HP laptop with vista windows and the virus protection that came with it has expired. I've been trying to download avg free but can't get it to work. Can someone tell me how I can get free protection that is compatible with vista windows. Simple terms please because I'm kinda new at this. Oh the protection that came with it was norton but I want something free please, thanks in advance.

Ok, this can be a tough one cause of Vista. First of all you will need to un-install Norton. Goto Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs and then a screen will show a list of different programs that you can un-install. Look for Norton and remove it. There may be a couple of Norton products on there, remove them all. Next try dwonloading AVG again or running it again. Also try Lavasoft.com and download AdAware for free, also try (and this is one of the best free ones) www.sunbeltsoftware.com and download the free version of Counterspy. It is a great program and will take about 45mins to one hr to run the scan. You can also goto Trendmicro.com and run a free online scan.
Your best bet though, if you can round up $45 is to buy Trend Micro - Internet security 2007. This is a great Antivirus, Antimalware, Antispam, Firewall, etc. program and you can usually get a really good rebate on it depending on where you get it. If you can get it from Fry's Electronics, they usually have a full rebate or like a $35 rebate, no joke!
What kind of error msg do you get when you tried installing AVG?
Good luck and don't goto Geek Squad!
ps - DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING FROM AOL!!!! Also, the ones I mentioned above do not install any other software or adware.

Without knowing if your issue is actually downloading or installing AVG Free, I'll try to offer two quick solutions.

1st. Completely remove Norton. The best way is probably to search for "SymNRT" and download the Symantec Norton Removal Tool. Run that to completely remove norton.

2nd. Go to www.avgfree.com Be sure to choose the free version, some people accidentally select the wrong one. Try downloading it from their link to download.com or use the alternate download location just below. It should install fine after that.

If not, you may have a virus already. If that is the case, try installing in "safe mode". To get into safe mode, restart the PC and tap F8 as it just begins to boot. Try to install AVG then

I don't know that the free anti-virus programs work. When you download them you get all kinds of other problems, like pop-ups, and other types of hinky things that happen. AOL I believe will let you install Macafee free for a certain period of time, other than that, spend the 40.00 a year and know that your computer is safe.
