It is not illegal to possess a baby turtle. It is illegal to sell them in normal cicumstances, but there are exceptions. But it is not at all illegal to possess them or to buy them, even if the seller is selling them illegally. And it is perfectly legal to give them away if no money is exchanged. And the person who said they need their mom is not very bright. Snapping turtles are one of few species of turtle that will eat their own young.

Snappers are wonderful pets! You lucky dog you! I'm jealous!

With proper care, he'll grow quite large over the next few years.

Start with a small, 5 gallon tank with filter. Feed him night-crawlers and other live, quite lean foods - bits of beef, fish, chicken, etc.

As he grows, graduate to larger tanks. He'll grow into live fish, minnows, feeder fish, etc. And more night-crawlers etc.

Make sure your tank is mostly filled with water - but give him some land to get out once in a while.

They're not very cuddly - but snappers are among the most fascinating of turtles -

I envy you.

Wow a snapping turtle is dangerous, if it bites you... ... ...
Are you sure you want to keep it? You may think about giving it to the turtle farm(if there's one there).
Plus, I think that it would be better if you get a normal turtle.

We have a snapper.. he's a little over a year old now. He is in a 10 gallon tank. Snappers are not good swimmers, they should have enough water to catch feeder fish in but he should be able to stand up and get air. Ours has a basking dock that he periodically takes off the wall. He eats feeder fish, krill, shrimp, some veggies.. He's pretty fascinating. We love him. :)
Make sure he has a UVA/UVB light, a place to bask, water, natural food.

it mostly eats the fingers of people silly enough to keep them as pets. they are not a good pet. seriously a grown snapping turtle can take your finger right off. Put it back in the wild where you found it..as soon as possible so that it can prepare for winter.
