I want to border my front porch with them as a privacy screen.

I don't need fast privacy. I am patient and will wait for them to grow.
basically, I don't want them to be established with spaces in between. I plan to trim them to about 3' tall.

My front porch is NOT a small area, I don't know what gave that idea.

The shrub withstands heavy pruning according to the label and the Houston Garden Center

so you can get out of your soap box.

Maybe "waist high" privacy screen is easier to understand.

A privacy screen for a front porch and you are using something that gets 12 feet high and wide? How high is this screen going to be? Are you creating a security problem by closing in your porch? The amount of pruning required to keep these guys in size will be tremendous, you'll end up stressing the plants creating all sorts of pest problems and....hold on, let me get off my soap box.

If this is just a medium sized hedge, there's no use putting in such monsters, try something more restrained such as Heavenly Baboo...Nandina. It grows in clumps from the ground so pruning should be as much at ground level removing the old stems as anything on the top.......too bad 90% of landscape people are too lazy to prune properly.....ooops, I'm on my soap box again.

Anyway, to answer your question.....if you really want to put waxleaf privet into a small area like this, then no closer than 36 inches and better 40+ inches if you are going to keep the plants less than 5 feet tall. If they will be allowed to get 6 feet or more high, then I'd go 48 inches or more apart. .

Privets get about 12 ft high and 12ft wide, so unless you are planning to keep them trimmed plant accordingly
